Abstract Josef Alfred Anderson (also spelled Joseph in some records) was born on July 10, 1868, in Lommaryd, Sweden. He immigrated to the United States in 1876, and began attending Augustana College and Theological Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois. Anderson earned his bachelor’s from the college in 1888, and his master’s in 1891. He then attended the seminary, and graduated in 1892. Anderson was ordained on June 5, 1892, in Lindsborg, Kansas. Abstract The Backman family was active in Galesburg, Ill., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The head of the family was Carl August Backman, who immigrated to the United States in 1868 and began to study at Augustana College in 1875.
